HOW YOUR SKIN TANS
There are two types of ultraviolet light rays that tanning beds emit UVA & UVB. Different indoor tanning units use different combinations of these two rays. Whatever combination used, your exposure time is regulated by the federal government to minimize your risk of sunburn. The more minutes a bed is regulated to do, the weaker it is.(for example some of the older tanning units were FDA regulated to do anywhere from 25/30/40 and even 50 minutes) The less minutes a bed is regulated to do the stronger it is. UVB is reffered to as the burning ray, we use a low blend of UVB to ensure that you have a comfortable tanning experience (just enough UVB to stimulate melanin production). Melanin is what gives skin the abilty to tan. UVA is reffered to as the browning ray. We use just enough UVA to brown your skin for a golden tan. By controlling the type and amount of UV light you receive in our salon there is no doubt that it is the smartest place to aquire a tan. There are some protective measures you should take to maximize your tanning visits.
#1 PROTECT YOUR EYES
Simply closing them or wearing regular sunglasses while you tan is not adequate protection. You need to wear FDA compliant eye protection.
#2 PROTECT YOUR LIPS
Lips do not produce melanin and may burn unless you protect them with an SPF lip balm.
#3 CHECK YOUR MEDICATIONS
Some medications may cause a sensitivity to UV exposure.
#4 USE A PROFESSIONAL INDOOR TANNING LOTION
Tanning lotion sold in our salon are different from the ones you can buy at any other store. Todays tanning lotions are bioengineered to maximize the results of your tanning visit while increasing the quality of your tan. Moist nourished skin tans best. Indoor tanning lotions are designed to supply your skin with the essential nutrients necessary for a tan. These special ingredients also moisturize your skin to keep it looking young and healthy.
SPF lotions, creams and sprays are meant for extreme amounts of UV. Indoors you do not need SPF ( unless specified by your physician for a past or existing condition) Using an SPF will only halt your ability to tan in a tanning unit because the UV emitted in tanning units is much lower then the natural sun. When tanning outdoors always use a proper sunblock.
#5 USE A TAN EXTENDER
A tan extender is simply a moisturizer for UV treated skin, the heat from tanning sessions can dry out skin. In order to prevent flaking which will essentially fade a tan quicker, use a tan extender to lock in that golden color.
#6 EXFOLIATE
Most tanners are under the assumption that exfoliating removes a tan, in actuality it will help produce a deeper darker tan. Removing dead flaky skin cells enables you to tan fresh moist skin.
QUICK TIPS
-Wait at least 2-3 hours before showering after tanning, tanning is a delayed reaction.
-Avoid using bars of soap, due to the high PH level which dries out the skin. Instead try using a gel or cream soap.
